Relief printing is a subtractive process. Planning for the patterns of darks and lights, a drawing is made on a plate surface. Any areas that will be white in the finished print are carved away. The remaining surface will hold the ink and appear as the dark areas of the image.

Carved Plate with Proof

"Hershey" Final Print ~$150
Carving a relief plate requires the artist remove areas to leave shapes that will be black in finished artwork. Carving into the plate will create open spaces and textures rather than a carved line that describes form. Drawing is an additive process where the marks made build the image on the paper. The carved plate is a mirror image of the final printed artwork. Printmakers are geniuses!
Prices of prints are based on size of final artworks
and complexity of image @$125-$450
